At the opening ceremony, Mr. Jean-Marie ZACCHI, Honorary President and Advisor of the Exhibition of Contemporary Art France-Japan, and Mr. Bumpei MAGORI, President of the Japan International Artists Society (JIAS), addressed the gathering, offering warm congratulations to the artists and heartfelt thanks to the attendees. Mr. Yasushi ISOBE, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Bijutsu no Mado at Seikatsunotomo-sha Corporation, also spoke on behalf of the exhibition sponsors. Following their remarks, a ribbon-cutting ceremony with representatives from Japan and France officially opened the event.
Many Japanese artists who were unable to gather during the pandemic enjoyed the chance to reconnect, while international artists attending the exhibition exchanged cultural experiences with local artists. Several international participants shared positive impressions, calling the exhibition "truly wonderful," “an exciting chance to view so many Japanese works," and “extremely inspiring."
The 25th exhibition was organized into 26 rooms
This year, the exhibition hall was organized into 26 rooms, beginning at the entrance and showcasing a wide variety of works. Leading figures in the French art world — including the Honorary President of Le Salon and the President of Salon d'Automne — contributed pieces that featured distinctive motifs, techniques, vivid colors, and three-dimensional aesthetics representative of international art. Alongside these, Japanese artists displayed a rich collection of contemporary works across various mediums: oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, traditional Japanese paintings (abstract and figurative,) landscapes, calligraphy, ink art, paper cutting, crafts, and digital art. This non-genre, non-themed arrangement created a vibrant tapestry that captured the diverse spirit of Japanese creativity today, bringing together artists from different backgrounds in a shared artistic pursuit.
In the spacious area at the far end of the hall, towering works up to four meters high captivated visitors with their expressiveness. The Espace privé or "private space" room is a favorite for allowing visitors to immerse themselves in each artist's unique world and continued to receive enthusiastic praise at the 2024 event. Additionally, large architectural models by artists in architecture drew significant attention, adding another engaging dimension to the exhibition.
仏語Remise des prix 2024 à l’auditorium
On the exhibition's first day, the National Art Center's auditorium was the stage for an awards ceremony for last year's prize recipients. About half of the awardees attended and were each presented with a certificate of merit. Exhibition sponsors presented additional awards to this year's honorees, while Le Salon Honorary President Jean-Marie ZACCHI awarded medals and certificates to artists who received Gold, Honorable Mention, and Sponsored Prizes at Le Salon 2024. A new "ZACCHI Prize," established this year by Mr. ZACCHI, was also awarded to four artists together with an original oil painting by Mr. ZACCHI himself.
仏語Patronage spécial du Salon d’Automne
The Salon d'Automne, our special sponsor for this year’s exhibition, welcomed a new president, painter Jean-Christophe LÉVÊQUE . Although Mr. LÉVÊQUE could not attend the exhibition in person, a message from him was included in the event catalog. In his message, he affirmed the shared vision of JIAS and Salon d'Automne to “embrace all forms of art and grow together,” expressing the collective belief in art’s power to build the future. JIAS/Europe and Americas representative Mr. Bumpei MAGORI conveyed his hope that Mr. LÉVÊQUE will visit Japan in the future to celebrate this partnership in person.
During the exhibition, visitors paused to view recent footage of domestic and international exhibitions and critiques, which played on screens throughout the hall. Social media also became an active space for enthusiastic feedback and praise from Japanese and global audiences, adding to the exhibition's vibrant atmosphere.
Once again this year, a donation box was placed at the entrance to support the "Project to buy art supplies for children who love painting in Rikuzentakata." This project aids the city of Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture, a region affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Thanks to the generous contributions, totaling 40,860 yen, 450 sketchbooks were donated to local childcare centers in Rikuzentakata via the association of childcare centers in the city of Rikuzentakata.
